How Coffee Causes Teeth Stains 4
4:01 AMHow Coffee Causes Teeth Stains
The teeth’s enamel, the hard protective layer all around that protects it, is porous. That is why the enamel can be easily stained because it is not difficult for substances such as coffee to fill the pores. The nature of enamel also varies from person to person. In some it is rough while in others, it is smooth. Rougher enamels are more likely to get stained as compared to the smooth ones.
Some other factors have an effect on coffee’s staining impact on teeth. Genetic differences such as thicker enamels or natural yellowing due to ageing can cause differences in staining due to coffee. At times, some people wrongly make the culprit out of coffee when it is actually their advancing age to blame for yellowing of teeth.
Foods and beverages with high acid content can speed up the teeth staining because they have a corrosive effect on your enamel. Coffee has high acid content. Some other drinks with high acid content are tea, orange juice, tomatoes and many citreous fruits. Coffee with its dark colour has to take the blame for causing teeth stains more easily than other foods or beverages. The more you drink these beverages, particularly the dark ones such as tea, coffee and colas, the more you run the risk of staining your teeth.
The wise thing would be to limit your coffee consumption to one or two cups daily. Moreover, you should avoid keeping the drink in your mouth for too long as it increases the exposure to teeth. Having coffee with a straw can also help. Brushing your teeth or rinsing it water every time you
have coffee is also a very good way of keeping teeth stains away. Teeth stains from coffee or any other substance may not require a special dental visit, but if you want to try any sort of whitening or teeth cleaning product, do so only after your dentist’s advice.
Enamel Caries
Effect of cavities on enamel is due to chemical process caused by the acidic environment produced by bacteria. The bacteria consume the sugar content of the food eaten to get energy. While doing so, they also produce lactic acid. This acid results in the demineralisation of crystals in the enamel. The damage is continuously caused until the bacteria physically penetrate the dentin.
Secondary Caries
The common locations of occurrence of secondary caries are the edges of restorations and fracture places in the mouth. This type of caries can result from inappropriate adjustment of a restoration or inadequate restoration extension. For complete treatment of secondary caries, there has to be complete removal of the original lesion, which may later appear as recurrent caries.
Acute Caries
Acute caries is a rapid process, which affects a large number of teeth. Lesions of acute caries are light brown or grey than the lesions caused by other types of caries. The caseous consistency of acute caries makes the excavation of the infected teeth difficult. Common effects seen in patients of acute caries are pulp exposure and sensitive teeth.
Arrested Caries
Caries that becomes static without showing any tendency to progress further is called arrested caries. With the improvement of oral hygiene, even advanced lesions may be arrested. One can note arrested caries by dark pigmentation without any breakdown of tooth tissues.
Early Childhood Caries
Also known as baby bottle tooth decay, early childhood caries occurs in young children. It occurs when a baby is fed with a milk bottle at bedtime and few drops of milk remain in the mouth for a longer time resulting in tooth decay. This type of dental caries causes yellowing of the teeth, inflammation of the gums and excessive pain in the teeth causing difficulty in eating, speaking and sleeping. Usually, two the upper front teeth are affected. To avoid early childhood caries, night-time breast-feeding and bottle-feeding should be avoided once the first baby teeth begin to appear.
If dental caries is left untreated, it could cause extreme pain and mouth infection ultimately leading to excavation of the infected teeth. To prevent different types of tooth decay, Brush your teeth at least twice per day, floss your teeth daily and avoid sugary foods and beverages. Visiting a dentist twice in a year is also a good idea.
The wisdom teeth usually begin to grow between the ages 17 and 21. The healthy wisdom teeth do not cause a lot of pain but they can be quite irritating throughout the day. At times they can become intense and not let you focus on anything else. You wished that there was a way out of this teeth pain. There is no tooth decay due to wisdom teeth growth but the pain can still be excruciating at times.
Some easy-to-implement ways of treating the wisdom tooth pain
- Get a topical numbing agent. These are available as oral numbing medications in most pharmacies, retail stores or supermarkets. Just apply a small amount to the affected area to numb the site for up to 30 minutes at a time.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Warm saltwater helps ease mild wisdom tooth pain and you can save yourself from the use of medications. Just run the solution inside your mouth for half a minute and spit. Be cautious not to gulp down the saltwater.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be used. One of these is Acetaminophen which helps relieve the pain related to emerging wisdom teeth. You need to follow directions for dosage and other precautions on the pain reliever packaging. There might be warnings labelled on the bottle which you need to focus on. If you have other health problems, or if you are taking other medications, consult your doctor. He should tell you whether taking any over the counter medications are avoidable due to harmful drug reactions, or not.
- Many home remedies can also cure wisdom tooth pain. Chew garlic or onions to benefit your teeth. Garlic makes the teeth healthy and strong. Chewing an onion for only three minutes has been clinically found to bring down the level of germs in the mouth. Place a sliced onion on the wisdom tooth that pains or its surrounding gum. This is an effective way to deal with wisdom tooth discomfort as they help to lessen the pain.
- Cloves can be used as another home remedy for reducing tooth pain and they also help with infection. Clove oil can be used on the painful wisdom tooth and the area surrounding the gum. Mix clove oil with garlic and rock salt to apply to the tooth. It can be an especially effective wisdom tooth pain reliever. Clove oil may also be applied along with a bit of pepper powder and one-fourth teaspoon of rock salt. This paste should be applied directly on the tooth or gum that is painful.
